GR40 Mustang sets AIX track record and wins first time out
Darrell Anderson's newly constructed '04 GR40 Mustang set a new track record and won its first race at Infineon Raceway on Saturday.
Piloted by Guy Cunningham for its inaugural event, the #45 GR40 mount was quick out of the box. \"We haven't even started development tuning of this car yet, and we did none of that this weekend," said Cunningham,
who also stated he was pleased to be racing in the prestigious American Iron Extreme class of the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) series of races.
The car is the latest SN95 based GR40RT pony to come out of the Griggs Racing livery and has been a sensation everywhere it has been shown. Anderson is to be the on-going driver; however a schedule conflict necessitated Cunningham filling in.
Of note, Bruce Griggs, Cunningham's team mate in prior years was also in the event, finishing second on Saturday in his venerable "Old Blue" '93 GR40 Mustang, the same car in the same configuration that was undefeated in 2002 AIX competition, and winning championships in 2002, 2003,
and other selected races and events in SCCA and NASA.
"The #40 car was sitting in the back of the shop since last run a year ago at the SAAC convention at Miller Motorsport Park in Utah driven by noted journalist Tom Wilson", said Griggs.
He brought it out at the last minute "to see if he could still drive." Griggs, who turns 60 this year, said, "I guess I can still do it, and I guess the old slug can still run too." This was proven by Griggs' victory the following day in Sunday's AIX race.
