Saturday's qualifying results saw Bruce Griggs at the head of the field with a 2:02 lap time, followed by Guy Cunningham, Kevin Chambers, Rob Ainscough, Vageli Karas, Ed Varon, Ernesto Roco, and during the qualifying session, Darin Smedberg suffered a spectacular engine failure on the front straight that engulfed his car and the track in smoke and flames but both car and driver emerged in good shape with the exception of the roached motor and some extinguisher residue. The start of the race itself was clean with Griggs pulling to an early lead, but an unfortunate incident in Turn 14 on the first lap took Varon out of contention and put Roco in the back of the pack trying to catch up after the resulting spin. A fierce battle soon developed between Ainscough, Chambers, Karas, and Cunningham for the top spots. Ainscough was in front of the pack until he spun and then had to retire with a thrown belt that killed his power steering, charging, and cooling systems. Chambers was closing the three-second gap that he had behind Karas and Cunningham when he lost a radiator hose and pulled to the edge of the track to leave the two front-runners in AI to battle alone. Karas managed to slip by Cunningham near the end of the race and then held on to take the win by driving the wheels off of his Mustang including an amazing late-braking contest into Turn 14 that had the crowd on its feet. The final podium finishing order for AI was Karas, Cunningham, and Roco. Griggs took the overall field crown and the AIX win.
Sunday's qualifying saw Bruce Griggs with the top time of the morning followed by Cunningham again on the AI pole with Karas, Chambers, Roco, and Ainscough rounding out the order. Unfortunately, Ainscough developed engine trouble during the end of the qualifying session and had to pack it in before the start of the race. The start was again clean with Cunningham passing Griggs just before Turn 2 and Chambers, Karas, and Roco staying close behind. Multiple spins by nearly all the drivers resulted in many lead changes that saw Cunningham take the win, followed by Chambers in the second position and Karas in third. Griggs again was the first overall finisher and took the AIX win.
The next race for the series will be held at Las Vegas Speedway on August 9-11 and will feature the full ALMS configuration inside the stadium. The field should be the biggest of the season with many of the previously sidelined cars back in action and some new drivers joining the grid for what promises to be a showcase event.
