EXPLAINING THE DIFFERENCES IN STEERING RACK RATIOS

Can you explain the differences in your steering racks? The street version with variable ratio is confusing, since a rack and pinion is a single gear ratio.

To answer your question:

We have 2 basic racks that we fit to all our GR40/350 applications. We install -6 AN fittings, secure the steel lines from vibration failure, and install different tie rods and/or rack length extenders and travel limiters depending on the specific GR40 or GR350 chassis kit they are to fit. We can also put together a combination of parts to fit any OE or kit car application required. Each rack starts as a re-manufactured unit from the same source as Motorcraft.

One is the 36 spline like the fox racks, 15:1 which is linear on center.

The other is Mustang V shaft pinion, as in an SN95. This rack is also 15:1 on average from lock to lock (Same degree steering angle at one turn of the steering wheel), however, it is slower on center, making it less sensitive in a straight line, which some street drivers prefer in our highly responsive GR40/350 chassis kits.

Both units utilize firmer T bars. But we could go firmer, however in any Mustang, with greater steering effort over stock created by large R compound tires and /or increased scrub radius from ultra wide wheels coupled with high caster angles used on our system, usually results in slower lap times driving at the limit. We don't believe that a driver wrestling with ultra firm steering is conducive to good lap times, no matter how he "feels" about the car and the feedback. As a matter of fact, our testing years ago proved it.

Anyway no one has complained about our racks as far as I know. With that said, out of hundreds of racks sold we have had two hydraulic failures which we replaced under warranty.
