Center of Gravity

The Center of Gravity is the single point at which a vehicle’s entire mass can be treated as acting, in all three axes. Its longitudinal position determines the static weight distribution between the axles, its lateral position determines the left-to-right split, and its height above ground determines how much load transfers in any manoeuvre. Height is the variable that matters most in cornering, because lateral load transfer is proportional to the height of the center of gravity above the roll axis and inversely proportional to track width, so lowering it reduces load transfer and increases the total grip the tires can produce. It is also the reference for polar moment of inertia and the point about which roll, pitch and yaw are described, which is why relocating heavy components lower and closer to it is one of the few changes that improves several behaviors at once.
