Master Cylinder

THE DEFINITION AS EXPLAINED BY BRUCE GRIGGS

A Master Cylinder is the hydraulic pump in a brake system that converts brake pedal force into hydraulic pressure delivered to the calipers. Master cylinder bore diameter determines the relationship between pedal effort and pedal travel — larger bores produce shorter, firmer pedal feel with higher effort; smaller bores produce longer travel with lower effort. Master cylinder selection must match caliper piston volumes for proper pedal feel.
