Weight Distribution

THE DEFINITION AS EXPLAINED BY BRUCE GRIGGS

Weight Distribution is how a vehicle’s total static weight is divided between the axles and between the left and right sides, normally stated as front-to-rear and left-to-right percentages. Front-to-rear split sets how much vertical load each pair of tires starts with and therefore how much grip each axle can generate, which is a primary determinant of steady-state balance. Left-to-right and diagonal, or cross-weight, distribution determines whether the car behaves the same turning in both directions. Distribution is changed by moving mass, which is permanent and effective, rather than by spring or bar changes, which redistribute transferred load without changing the static figure.
