THE DEFINITION AS EXPLAINED BY BRUCE GRIGGS
Balance is the relationship between front and rear grip that determines whether a vehicle understeers, oversteers or turns neutrally at the limit. It is described by which end reaches the limit of adhesion first and by how much, and it is rarely a single number because it changes through a corner as load transfers and as the driver moves between braking, steady cornering and power application. Balance is set by weight distribution, tire size and compound, roll couple distribution, roll center heights, alignment, differential behavior and aerodynamics, and it is adjusted by changing how vertical load is shared between the tires rather than by changing the tires’ capability. The usual practice is to identify where in the corner the imbalance occurs, because entry, mid-corner and exit problems have different causes and respond to different adjustments.
