Bump is suspension movement in the compression direction, in which the wheel travels upward toward the chassis and the spring is compressed. It is the opposite of rebound, and bump damping is the damper force resisting it, which controls how much of a road input is transmitted into the chassis versus absorbed by the wheel. Bump travel is the distance available before the suspension contacts its bump stop, and the amount remaining at static ride height is what limits how much a car can be lowered without bottoming. The term is also used as a prefix for geometry effects that occur through compression travel, most notably bump steer, the toe change produced by suspension travel alone.
