THE DEFINITION AS EXPLAINED BY BRUCE GRIGGS
A Track Day is a non-competitive event where drivers operate their personal vehicles on a closed road racing circuit under instructed or open-lapping conditions. Track days range from beginner High Performance Driving Education (HPDE) events with classroom instruction and in-car coaching, to advanced open-lapping sessions for experienced drivers. Track days are the primary use case for performance suspension, brake, and tire upgrades on street cars. Most chassis tuning research and development happens at track days.
